Our employees work in a variety of areas in which they may make decisions regarding the approval or denial of claims for Social Security or Supplemental Security Income, help beneficiaries in the resolution of problems, or compute benefits. Many of our positions involve direct face-to-face contact with the public; others require contact primarily by telephone. Our employees receive in-depth training not only in Social Security and State laws, but also in the computer processing equipment used in our automated environment.

The Headquarters of the Social Security Administration is located in Baltimore, Maryland and provides management and computer support to an organization of over 65,000 employees. In addition to the headquarters site, there are 10 regional offices, 6 processing centers, 3 data operations centers, and about 1,300 local Social Security offices located throughout the country.
The New York Region, with approximately 5,000 employees, has 107 field offices and 17 Office of Hearings Operations located throughout New Jersey, New York, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. In addition, our three teleservice centers are located in Jamaica, New York; Hackensack, New Jersey; and San Juan, Puerto Rico and the Northeastern Program Service Center is located in Jamaica, New York. Our Manhattan, Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens Social Security Card Centers provide Social Security Number services to people who live or receive mail in New York, Bronx, Kings and Queens counties. Nearly seven million New York Region beneficiaries receive more than $50 billion in Social Security and Supplemental Security Income benefits annually.
