What we do in Facilities

At Social Security, we manage over 29 million square feet of office space nationwide. We depend on employees with a variety of expertise and technical specialties to help us manage our office locations. We use the latest monitoring and electronic security systems, along with cutting-edge smart card systems to control facilities’ access points.

Positions in Facilities

Architects

Apply methods, techniques and applications to design, construct and improve our buildings. Negotiate with representatives from the General Services Administration nationwide on matters pertaining to Social Security’s facilities such as design requirements, code compliance, cost and real property management.

Industrial Hygienists and Safety & Occupational Health Specialists

Protect the health and safety of people in the workplace and the community:

• Evaluate the health effects of chemicals or noise in a workplace.
• Anticipate when a hazardous condition could occur causing an adverse health effect on an employee or the environment.
• Recognize conditions that could lead to adverse health effects to employees or a community population.

Promote health and safety within a work environment:

• Review, evaluate, and analyze work environments and design programs and procedures to control, eliminate and prevent disease, or injury caused by chemical, physical and biological agents or ergonomic factors.
• Inspect workplaces to investigate whether they are in compliance with state and federal laws or employer policies and conduct analyses on the effectiveness of safety and health programs.

General Electrical, Fire Protection, & Mechanical Engineers

Provide subject matter expertise in the specified field, applying advanced engineering, principles, concepts, standards, and methods:

• Serve as agency-wide consultants in support of facility project managers across our national portfolio, assisting in review and solution of complex facility planning and engineering challenges.
• Generate and modify technical drawings using a computer aided drafting system to maintain an organized system of records.
• Use building information modeling (BIM) technology as an accurate virtual model for the planning, design, construction, and operation of SSA facilities nationwide.

Supply Specialists & Inventory Management Specialists

Manage agency warehouse operations and provide supply services and distribution.

What we do in Physical Security

The Office of Security & Emergency Preparedness (OSEP) has various security and emergency preparedness career fields.

We rely on professionals in physical security to ensure the safety and security of all Social Security’s employees, contractors, and visitors with timely response and recovery to all threats and hazards.

Responsible for agency preparedness to carry out essential functions in the event of a national emergency.

Responsible for performing risk-based vulnerability assessments of facilities to ensure the safety and security of people and property.
