Agency Program Description
Social Security claims denied at the initial and reconsideration levels may be appealed to the hearing level. Most of the claims that are appealed to the hearing level are for disability benefits.
Information about our disability program may be viewed at Benefits for People with Disabilities.
Data about this key workload has been requested by the general public, advocates, representatives and governing bodies. So that the public can view historical information about two key workload indicators (hearing case receipts and hearing case closing pending), we are providing this information with fiscal years (FY) 1985-2009. Data for years after 2009 are available through the website of Office of Hearings Operations (OHO) beginning with FY 2010. For current fiscal year information by hearing office, visit the Hearing Office Workload Data page. To see the data, by hearing office, released for FY 2010 through the previous fiscal year, visit the Archived Public Data page.
Data Collection Description
The Social Security Administration (SSA) used a variety of tools and data warehouses throughout the period covered by this dataset (1985 to 2009). In general, SSA personnel enter individual case information into our case processing applications and tools.
Notes
- A Federal Fiscal Year (FY) is the 12-month period that starts the Saturday after the last Friday of September and ends the last Friday of September. Most years our fiscal year workload reports contain 52 weeks since we include only full weeks, rather than cut off in the middle of a week. Every few years the reporting period is 53 weeks when we apply the end of week cutoff.
- Reporting quarters are administratively set reporting periods and do not necessarily correspond exactly to calendar months.
