The field organization includes 10 regional offices, 6 processing centers, and approximately 1,230 field offices.
The field office is the community-based Social Security office for conducting business with SSA. To find a local field office, go to: Social Security Office Locator.
This Yearly Data for Field Office Visitors dataset gives yearly, national level data for the average daily number visitors to our field offices. We use this data to monitor our field office service delivery.

Agency Program Description
Most people can file for retirement benefits and transact other business with us online. Our goal is to increase the use of our retirement and other online services. However, we will continue our commitment to provide options for those people who want to access our services in ways that are more traditional such as by telephone, in person at a Social Security office, or by mail. Our more than 1,200 local field offices provide community-based access to Social Security information and services.
For more information about the agency and how it is organized, go to: About the SSA.
Dataset Description
We compute the average daily number of field office visitors by dividing the number of visitors to SSA field offices by the number of days. The visitor count includes all weekday visitors, even those who left before being served (left without service). Weekend days and holidays are not included in the number of days. We exclude offices that do not see visitors.
This dataset provides yearly data at the national level beginning with federal fiscal year (FY) 2006.
Data Collection Description
When a visitor comes to a field office, their name, social security number, and other information becomes part of a computer system intake process. From those entries, we derive the visitor counts. The databases storing the counts have evolved over the years. Since October 2008 (FY 2009), we have used a process called the Customer Service Record Operational Data Store (CSR ODS).
