Background
The goal of the SSA is to improve core services provided to the public and provide alternative methods for conducting business with the agency. In support of this goal, the SSA provides a wide range of internet services to allow the public to conduct business via this widely used medium. For example, the SSA offers members of the public who receive benefits the opportunity to change or establish direct deposit information via the internet. Over the past 4 years, our direct deposit workload has grown and so has the use of the online application. Our goal is to make it easier and faster for individuals to change or establish direct deposit information via the internet from the comfort and convenience of their homes or offices.

Agency Program Description
The Social Security Administration (SSA) administers a number of online applications that provide beneficiaries an alternative to visiting the office. People receiving Social Security (Retirement, Survivors, and Disability) benefits can use my Social Security to start or update direct deposit information online. This service is not currently available for people who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or do not have a U.S. mailing address. The changes are sent to a database and updated to the Master Beneficiary Record (MBR).
Dataset Description
These datasets provide monthly volumes at the national level from federal fiscal year 2008 on for Internet Direct Deposit applications. They only include Internet Direct Deposit transactions. It should be noted that, in addition to using our online Direct Deposit application, the public may also call our 800 number, visit a field office, or request a change of direct deposit by mail. This dataset pertains only to the online method.
Data Collection Description
We capture the internet transactions when public users access the application. We store the transactions in our data stores and data warehouses.
Notes
- A Federal Fiscal Year (FY) is the 12-month period that starts the Saturday after the last Friday of September and ends the last Friday of September. Most years our fiscal year workload reports contain 52 weeks since we include only full weeks, rather than cut off in the middle of a week. Every few years the reporting period is 53 weeks when we apply the end of week cutoff.
- Reporting quarters are administratively set reporting periods and do not necessarily correspond exactly to calendar months.
